Submit the ballad of a man with a debt he can't pay and a god he stopped talking to somewhere outside Laredo. Lean into the classic era — the dusty, weathered, mostly-1970s heart of it, when the genre got mean and honest at the same time. Storytellers and barroom philosophers over anything that's hit the radio this century. Pedal steel that sounds like crying and a voice that's smoked too many high notes away. The more weathered the better — if the narrator hasn't done at least one thing he regrets, dig deeper.
