The family league, settled at the table

Outlaw Country Week

Nashville told them to clean it up, put on a rhinestone suit, and sing about something nice. They told Nashville to go to hell, grew the beard out, and made records about whiskey, women they shouldn't have loved, and the long ugly highway between the crime and the consequence. The genuine article — bad men with soft hearts and worse habits, the kind of song where somebody's dead by the second verse and nobody in the bar looks up. Submit the ballad of a man with a debt he can't pay and a god he stopped talking to somewhere outside Laredo. Lean into the classic era — the dusty, weathered, mostly-1970s heart of it, when the genre got mean and honest at the same time. Storytellers and barroom philosophers over anything that's hit the radio this century. Pedal steel that sounds like crying and a voice that's smoked too many high notes away. The more weathered the better — if the narrator hasn't done at least one thing he regrets, dig deeper.
